On Dec 7, 2012, Peking University successfully held the First Peking University Tinn Hsiu Yu Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in Sociology Awarding Ceremony. After four months of work of the assessment committee, three dissertations out of 24 nominated papers were selected as winners. Peking University vice dean of studies Professor Wu Baoke, Tsinghua University School of Humanities and Social Sciences dean Professor Li Qiang, Nanjing University School of Sociology dean Professor Zhou Xiaohong, Huazhong University of Science and Technology Department of Sociology vice dean Professor Wu Yi, Peking University Department of Sociology dean Professor Xie Lizhong, Renmin University Department of Sociology Professor Liu Shaojie and three awardees of the first Peking University Tinn Hsiu Yu Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in Sociology attended the Awarding Ceremony.
The First Peking University Tinn Hsiu Yu Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in Sociology was officially initiated this May. Through correspondence examination and conference examination, the assessment committee finally determined that ¡°Governance Under Siege: Research on Dual-formal governance practice at on Central China Town (1980-2009)¡± by Di Jinhua, ¡°Early sociology in China: A Difficult predicament¡± by Lu Yuan, and ¡°The Road to ¡®Russian Mind¡¯: an ethnography of social life in the Black Earth region of Russia¡± by Ma Qiang were the awarded dissertations this year. Seven other dissertations were awarded the nomination prize. According to the regulations of Tinn Hsiu Yu Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in Sociology, these three awardees would each attain a certificate and a prize medal issued by the Tinn Hsiu Yu Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in Sociology Assessment Committee, as well as a fellowship of 30,000 RMB.
During the Awarding Ceremony, Professor Xie Lizhong from Peking University Department of Sociology first recalled the establishment of Tinn Hsiu Yu Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in Sociology. He said to establish an academic award for doctoral dissertations within the field of sociology was his dream for a long time. He was moved and gratified that this fellowship could be set up with the support of Madam Helen Woo, and the first selecting process went smoothly with three outstanding academic papers. Professor Xie also promised that he and his colleagues in sociology would abide by the principle of strict selection and put quality before quantity, improve the assessing system, and perfect the procedure incessantly. He believed that Tinn Hsiu Yu Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in Sociology would become a heavy prize that could vibrate the academia of sociology.
Later, the three authors of the awarded dissertations received their prize from the guests. Lu Yuan from Nanjing University does research in the history of sociology. In his speech, he said, ¡°I remember my first encounter with Professor Tinn Hsiu Yu was in the dim library of Nanjing University when I read the academic periodicals he founded. How amazing it is that after many years, beyond time and space, I am connected with Professor Yu again by receiving the prize of Tinn Hsiu Yu Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in Sociology. I thanked him for his breaking contributions to China¡¯s early sociology. His efforts then enabled us to enjoy such advanced research environment.¡± Ma Qiang from Peking University Di Jinhua from Huazhong University of Science and Technology Department also gave their thank-you speeches.
After the Awarding Ceremony, Professor Zhou Xiaohong and Wu Yi gave wonderful academic speeches on relatively ¡°Cultural Feedback and Intergenerational Transmission in Artifact Civilization¡±, and ¡°Analysis of Political Development in Contemporary Chinese Mainland¡±, giving a perfect ending for the First Tinn Hsiu Yu Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in Sociology Awarding Ceremony.
Tinn Hsiu Yu Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships in Sociology is named after a well-known Chinese sociologist, former professor in Peking University, Mr. Tinn Hsiu Yu. It is the first academic award that targets at doctoral dissertations within the first-class discipline of sociology nationwide. This fellowship is sponsored by Peking University Tinn Hsiu Yu Sociology Fund, aiming at fostering the academic creative spirit in all doctoral candidates in sociology improving the quality of doctoral dissertations in sociology and thus contributing to the development and prosperity of sociological research in China. With the consultation by 19 schools and departments offering and doctoral degrees in sociology in China, and the approval from Chinese American Madam Helen Woo, daughter of Mr. Tinn Hsiu Yu and donor of Tinn Hsiu Yu Sociology Fund, this fellowship is awarded yearly since 2012, selecting from all doctoral dissertations in sociology (first-class discipline) in Chinese universities, and the winners should be no more than 5 (vacancy allowed).
